Presidents’ Day In Annapolis: MoCo GOP High School Students Meet the Governor
By Sharon L. Cohen
Montgomery County (MoCo) public schools were closed on February 20th for Presidents’ Day, but rather than sleeping in (you know, what most teens would prefer to do) a group of MoCo Republican high school students went to Annapolis to meet Governor Larry Hogan and learn more about their state legislature. In addition to meeting the governor, 30 students and GOP club leaders spent the day meeting with leaders from Maryland’s Republican Party, learning about the state legislative process, touring the State Capitol complex, attending a hearing, and, importantly, meeting each other.
Ryan Gniadek, chair of the new MCTARs organization, spoke to students about MCTARs’ efforts to organize and connect county Republican clubs. For more information go to: https://mctars.com and https://www.facebook.com/tarsmontgomery. I spoke to the students about registering to vote, voting when they are old enough and making sure to vote absentee if/when they leave for college. (And, of course, voting Republican!)
We also talked about how students can help our party by volunteering on campaigns, helping at the MCGOP offices for SSL credits as well as supporting work at the local legislative district party level. LD chairs and candidates, if you have a need for student volunteers, let me know and I’ll be happy to push out requests to the students or connect you.
We need them and they need us, so if you know of a high school student who wants to get involved, form a Republican club at their school or volunteer for SSL credits, please get in touch with me: email@example.com. And a shout out to Republican parents, get your kids involved now before they head off to college and potentially get turned around politically.
Plans are now underway for a similar trip to the US Capitol. More details on that later. And of course, we’ll head back to Annapolis next year, so tell high school students and parents (we need parents to help) to mark down Monday, February 19, 2018 – for the 4th annual MoCo GOP High School Student Day in Annapolis.
Schools represented included: Damascus, Gaithersburg, Montgomery Blair, Quince Orchard, Richard Montgomery, Walt Whitman, Walter Johnson, and Winston Churchill.
